Ford Thunderbirds, Fairlanes, Pontiac Firebirds, Chevrolet Camaros, Buicks, Oldsmobiles, trucks and cars tricked, slammed and more will be found cruising Champion Speedway today as part of the Silver Dollar Car Classic, a weekend event hosted by the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Cars of all makes, models and years will look very pristine under the glow of stadium lighting. The chrome is polished so meticulously you can see your reflection from several feet away. The drivers will then vote on their "favorite" car or truck and the winner will be presented a trophy.
Many car owners spend thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours, patiently (and sometimes not) restoring classics that have actually never gone out of style. These unique and many one-of-a-kind models have been restored to better than showroom condition.
The annual event has become very popular with fans and drivers alike. And no big surprise, several past winners have been "muscle" cars.
"I can't wait to have them, they're a great group of people," said Kris Martin, general manager of Champion Speedway.
"These are nice people who appreciate the true value of a vehicle and I'm glad we can give this to our fans. It's a nice addition to our high level of racing.
"This event is one of the finest things that goes on in this community. I truly appreciate hosting them this weekend. I hope it's a continuing event."
Today's racing activity includes the late model division, sportsmen and hobby stock division. Tight points races are taking place in each of the three divisions. Every point matters to the drivers looking to get their first title or a repeat championship.
The night is sponsored in part by the Carson City Raiders Booster Club, who will have members on hand for club information and membership. The booster club is open to all football fans, with an emphasis on family fun.
