The following people were taken into custody by the Carson City jail. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in court.
-- George Lewis Gomes, 22, of Carson City, no occupation noted, was arrested at 11:58 p.m. Tuesday in the 4700 block of South Carson Street for investigation of two counts of battery with a deadly weapon, domestic battery, battery, child endangerment and arrest of a probationer.
Gomes reportedly entered the apartment of his estranged wife and allegedly assaulted her with a butcher knife. A woman friend tried to calm him.
Gomes allegedly threatened her with the knife by holding it to her throat. His estranged wife reportedly tried to intervene, but Gomes is accused of grabbing her by the hair, pulling her backward. A third friend, a man, tackled him in the hall and took the knife from him.
The wife left and the woman gathered five children, sitting with them on the couch by the front door. Gomes is said to have retrieved two more knives from the kitchen then allegedly pinned the woman down, punching her repeatedly in the face. He released her and she left the apartment with the children.
Police were summoned and said they found Gomes in the bedroom in his underwear, pretending to be asleep.
The woman who gathered the children had some injuries to her face: swollen lips and a series of fine lacerations about the mouth because Gomes allegedly had the knife in his hand while punching her. His wife's shirt was torn.
He is being held without bail.
