Tax committee seeks ballot question

DAYTON -- The Central Lyon County Park Tax Committee wants to place a question on the November 2002 ballot asking for voter approval of a 5-cent tax increase for maintenance, improvements and development of district parks.

Undaunted by the failure of a similar measure just two years ago, the committee has canvassed the communities within the district seeking to rouse interest in the proposal and will present petitions of support at today's Lyon County Commission meeting.

Composed of 15 members, the committee said the issue was hurt by misinformation and was not properly promoted prior to its defeat in November 2000.

If approved, the tax would generate approximately $76,000 annually. The money would stay in central Lyon County and be used primarily for maintenance of existing parks in Mound House, Dayton, Stagecoach and Silver Springs. Improvements and development of new parks would be secondary priorities.

Other Central Lyon County park issues on the agenda include a request to reduce board terms from four years to two years, and increase the Central Lyon County Park and Recreation Board from five to seven members, allowing the creation of two youth positions to join with the five adult members.

The Lyon County Commissioners meet in the Courthouse Annex, 27 South Main Street, Yerington, beginning at 9 a.m. For information call 577-5037 (Dayton/Silver Springs) or 463-6531.
