Brittany Puzey missed a perfect game by one batter, but a no-hitter still isn't too bad.
Puzey retired 15 of the 16 batters she face as the Carson High softball team defeated Hug 11-0 on Tuesday in a game that was called after five innings. Puzey retired the first 11 batters she faced before walking a batter with two outs in the fourth inning.
Puzey struck out 10 of the 15 batters she retired. The Senators played a near flawless game, belting out 12 hits and making no errors.
But Carson coach John Sullivan noted Puzey made it easy on his team.
"There's not a lot of opportunities to make errors when you strike out 10," Sullivan said.
The Senators (5-0, 3-0 in the Sierra League) scored three runs in the first, two in the second and six in the fourth.
In the first, Puzey doubled, Kayla Dunn tripled, Lindsay Farnworth doubled and Talia Joyce singled to make it 3-0. In the second, Ashley Reese and Puzey both doubled and Puzey scored on Kaylee Risi's sacrifice fly.
In the fourth, Bethany Henry doubled, Joyce and Reese both tripled, Puzey had an RBI double and Dunn and Farnworth both had RBI doubles to highlight the rally.
Puzey had three doubles and an RBI, Dunn had a double, triple and two RBIs, Farnworth had two doubles and three RBIs, Joyce had two hits, a triple and three RBIs and Reese had a double, triple and an RBI.
