Carson knights host convention

More than 200 Knights of Columbus and associates from throughout Nevada will be in Carson City this weekend for their annual convention.

Knights will be staying at the Pi-on Plaza and the Carson Station and holding their annual banquet at the Carson Nugget.

Reno Bishop Phillip Straling will conduct a Saturday Mass at St. Teresa of Avila.

Convention organizer Frank Holzhauer said it has been 14 years since the Knights held their annual gathering in Carson City.

Holzhauer expects there to be about 200 knights and their spouses and guests in town over the weekend.

"We will also have the state officers here and a representative of the national organization."

On Sunday, the Knights will elect new officers and those who will attend the supreme convention in Anaheim, Caif.

The convention will include a Cinco de Mayo celebration at the Plaza on Friday. There will be a golf tournament at Dayton Valley Golf Course and the banquet at the Carson Nugget on Saturday night.

Holzhauer has been a member of the Knights since 1968 and a Western Nevada resident since 1970.

"I've served in every office you can serve in," the Dayton resident said.

The Knights is an internationl group of Catholic men dedicated to charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. In Nevada, there are some 4,000 knights among 33 councils across the state.

The convention is being hosted by the Sierra Madre Council 4781, based in Carson City and affiliated with St. Teresa of Avila Church. Convention activities will be conducted at the church, the Pi-on Plaza Hotel Casino, convention headquarters, and the Carson Nugget.
