Carson girls swim second, CHS boys third

The streak is over, but the Carson High girls swim team still had another impressive effort at the NIAA/U.S. Bank 4A State Championships in Las Vegas.

With only five swimmers, the Carson girls placed second in the state on Saturday with 210 points. Reno won the title with 318 points. The Senators had won the last six state crowns.

Carson's boys, with six swimmers, also had an impressive meet, placing third in the state with 150 points. Boulder City won the state title with 331 points and Silverado placed second (178).

Douglas High's boys had an outstanding meet as well, placing fifth (128). Manogue finished fourth (128).

Carson's girls had two individual champions in Tara Theilemann (200-yard freestyle) and Lauren Costella (500 free). Even though Carson lost the state title to Reno, it still gained a sweet measure of revenge against the Huskies in the 200 free relay.

Reno beat Carson in the 200 free relay at the zone meet, but the Senators came back to beat the Huskies at state. Karen Burke, Costella, Megan Keller and Theilemann finished in one minute, 40.13 seconds to edge Reno, which finished second in 1:40.17.

Carson went one-two in the 200 free with Theilemann (1:49.86) and Kate Hardt (1:52.81). In the 100 free, Theilemann placed second (52.04) and Hardt took fourth (53.00).

Costella won the 500 free in 4:53.83 and placed third in the 200 individual medley (2:05.68). In addition, Carson placed second in the 200 medley relay (1:49.86) and third in the 400 free relay (3:38.95).

For Carson's boys, Justin Barber was able to move up to placed second in the 200 I.M. in 1:55.48. Barber was seeded third going into the finals. Barber also placed second in the 500 free (4:41.02).

Ryan Theilemann placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.57) and fourth in the 100 butterfly (54.03). Brent Server, who won the zone title, placed fourth in diving (334.60).

Carson also placed fourth in the 200 medley relay (1:46.75) and third in the 400 free relay (3:28.69). Also swimming for Carson were Jeff Stroup, Kiel Costella and Jake Oxoby.

Andy Sturgess helped lead Douglas to a fifth place finish as he took fifth in the 50 free (22.38) and fifth in the 100 free (48.82). Douglas also took third in the 200 free relay (1:31.52) and second in the 400 free relay (3:22.87).
