Pop Warner teams in playoffs

The Carson City Senator Midget Pop Warner football team improved to 4-3 with a 28-7 win over the Fallon Bulldogs.


The Senators will play in a first round playoff game at 8 p.m. today against Douglas.


Carson rushed for more than 300 yards for the fifth time this season against Fallon. The offense was led by Spencer Van Dyke and center Rob Valerius. Van Dyke and Johnny Kim combined for 25 yards of passing to set up Carson's first score by Travis Lamborn.


Lamborn and Chris McBroom combined to rush for more than 250 yards behind the blocking of Tyson Curren, Blake Anderson, Justin Shinn and Daniel Cunningham. Lamborn rushed for 165 yards and four touchdowns. Valerius was 4-for-4 in kicking the extra points.


Cunningham and Vince Scognamiglio led the defense which held Fallon to 23 yards in the first half. Scognamiglio filled for an injured Sean Christensen.


In the second half, Kim, Rich Norgrove, Mike McBroom and Austin Bartosz.


Frisco Merrill had four tackles and Tim Peters, Steven Peters and Donivan Dean led the defense that held Fallon to 35 yards in the second half and forced two fumbles.


Defensive backs Wes Reddick and Norgrove combined for several deflected passes and 16 tackles. Safety Scott Pierce also had several deflected passes and forced a fumble.


Mike McBroom, Chris McBroom, Lamborn, Norgrove and Cunningham played both ways throughout the game and combined for more than 30 tackles and five sacks.


JUNIOR MIDGET BLUES 6, DOUGLAS BLACK 0


In a 15-minute playoff to determine the Snow Bowl playoff brackets, the Carson Blue Junior Midgets clinched the No. 3 seed with the win. Carson will play the No. 2 seed Reno Jets at 6 p.m. today at Reno's Mira Loma Park. Douglas Black, the No. 4 seed, will play the No. 1 seed Reno Raiders at 8 p.m. at Mira Loma Park.


The winners will play in the Snow Bowl next Friday while the losers will play for third place prior to the Snow Bowl.


RENO RAIDERS 34, JUNIOR MIDGET BLUES 6


The Carson Junior Midgets Blue football team saw its six-game winning streak end against first place Reno.


Carson put together a scoring drive in the second quarter, capped by Robbie Bozin's 2-yard touchdown run to cut Reno's lead to 14-6.


Carson was able to move the ball against Reno in the second half, but was unable to score. Behind the blocking of Dylan Hills, Adam Carmazzi, Isaac Holt, Brandon Letizia, Nic Cutunilli, Daniel Feagan and Christian Cattell, running backs Phillip Maier, Bozin and Hunter Santillo ran the ball well. Ryan Eichenberger's passing to Brian Halverson also helped sustain drives.


Tyler Devall and Bozin each intercepted a pass to help lead the defense. Trae Tuttle, Maier, Matt Kiser, Eichenberger, Matt Barnes, Carmazzi, Levi Taylor, J.J. Demuth and Rusty Rogers also played well defensively.
