Girl suffers dog bites, goes to school anyway

A 13-year-old Carson Middle School student was bitten in the face, neck and arm Tuesday by a friend's dog, but continued on to school despite injuries that later required surgery, Carson City Animal Control officers said.

Animal control supervisor Tracy Edgar said the girl, whose name was not released, had gone to her friend's home around 7:50 a.m. on Imperial Way when the animal attacked her.

"Basically, the dog came out of the house and went after the girl," Edgar said. She noted that the dog stopped attacking on his own.

Animal control officials had one prior complaint against the 18-month-old Akita-shepherd mix named Lucky, she said.

The girl continued walking to Carson Middle School.

A school nurse contacted officials and reported the bite to Animal Control, said Principal Tom Badillo.

The teen was taken to Carson-Tahoe Hospital, where she was underwent "minor surgery," Edgar said.

The owner, Julie Hagen, was cited by an animal control officer for failing to control a vicious and dangerous animal. Lucky was taken into quarantine for 10 days.
