Music of "Nevada and the West" will be performed at the opening concert of the Carson City Symphony's 19th season at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Carson City Community Center theater, 851 E. William St.
Conductor David Bugli, viola soloist Virginia Blakeman Lenz, and "Western Suite" composer Adrienne Albert will hold a brief preview at 6:45 p.m. to introduce the concert. Ticket holders will be admitted free.
The concert will open with "Lesson of the Land" and "Fanfare" from "A Land of Sage and Sun," written for the Carson City Symphony by Jim Cockey in 2000. "Lesson of the Land" features Monique Laxalt, narrator, reading words of her father, Robert Laxalt, one of Nevada's best-known writers, who died last year.
The symphony will present the Nevada premiere of "Western Suite" by Los Angeles composer Adrienne Albert.
"It is descriptive music through which audiences and musicians can relate on a multitude of levels," Albert said.
Guest soloist Virginia Blakeman Lenz will perform Karl Stamitz' "Viola Concerto in D Major."
This concerto, written in 1774, is an example of music played in Europe at the time of the American Revolution.
The concert will close with Aaron Copland's "The Red Pony Suite." Copland wrote the suite for the film of John Steinbeck's story about a 10-year-old boy and his life on a California ranch. The performance is a tribute to Steinbeck on the 100th anniversary of his birth.
This concert is funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
Tickets are $12 general admission, $10 for seniors, students, and Symphony Association members, and free for children age 16 and younger. Tickets are available in advance at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King St., or at the door on the day of the performance.
