Carson golf settles for eighth in tournament

The Carson High golf team didn't have the best of days in the worst of conditions.

Carson settled for an eighth place finish in a Northern 4A Tournament on Tuesday at Sierra Nevada Golf Ranch. But following second and third place finishes in the first two events, the Senators are still safely in position to be one of the eight teams that qualify for the zone tourney.

"As long as you finish in the top eight, that's basically what you're trying to do," Carson coach Paul Croghan said. "We should be in good shape as far as making zone."

Galena won its third straight tournament, finishing with an excellent score of 393 for the conditions.

"It was cold and windy day," Croghan said. "It was miserable for everybody all the time. It was very gusty."

Matt Kinsinger also had an excellent day for the conditions, firing a 1-over-par 73 to be the low score medalist. The Northern 4A race continued to be wide open as Reed, which struggled in the first two events, placed second with a 413.

Douglas finished third for the second straight week with a 419. They were followed by Reno (422), McQueen (425), Spanish Springs (429), South Tahoe (431) and Carson (432).

Chad Gillmore led Carson with an 85. Steve McQuirk and Tyson Roser each fired an 86.

Freshman J.T. Cockerill, who led Carson in the first two tournaments, shot an 87.

"He had a couple of holes where he got in a little more trouble than he bargained for," Croghan said.

Andrew Meyer also fired an 88 for the Senators. Croghan said all of his golfers seemed to have one hole where they had a big number. But Croghan also said his team didn't play that badly, considering the conditions.
