Carson track impressive in meet

As far as Carson High was concerned, it was a beautiful day for a track meet.

With the weather cutting into Carson's ability to take to the track, the Senators returned to competition on Saturday and turned in many outstanding efforts during a five-way meet at North Valleys.

Both the CHS boys and girls placed second. Carson scored 102 points to place second behind Hug (148 1/2) The Senators were followed by Fallon (61), North Valleys (51 1/2) and Sparks (9).

For the girls, Carson placed second with 99 1/2 points. Fallon won with 108. They were followed by North Valleys (90 1/2), Hug (66) and Sparks (8).

Carson was also missing several athletes, who were taking college prepatory tests. Among them were top high jumper Mike Dittenber, Katie Kotter and Terah Laack, who showed up for the meet late.

In addition, top distance runner Shanna Sparks only competed in one event, the 400 meters. Top sprinter George Pincock, who has a time of 11.14 seconds in the 100, didn't compete in that event.

Pincock still had an outstanding meet, placing second in the 200, winning the 400 and helping Carson to a win in the 1,600 relay. Shaylyn Tom and Sinead McSweeney had outstanding meets for the girls.

Pincock placed second in the 200 in a photo finish with a time of 22.6. He won the 400 with a strong time of 50.0. Curtis Dixon placed third in the 400 (54.8).

Eric Hasty won the pole vault at 11-6 while Joe Trotter took third and John Christensen placed fourth. Stephen Waicul won the shot put (42-0) while Matt McAlman took third (40-9) and Nick Rebholtz was fourth (40-8 3/4).

Jack Brooks won the discus (136-9) while Rebholtz was second (133- 1/2) and Waicul was fourth. The 1,600 relay team of Stewart, Jeremy Gray, Moore and Pincock won in 3:38.0.

Also for Carson, Frank Bleuss was third in the 100 (11.3), Jon Stewart was fourth in the 200 (23.8) and Kellen Dale was fifth in the 110 high hurdles (18.89) and second in the 300 hurdles (43.3). Matt Moore was third in 44.7.

Adam Houghton placed second in the high jump and Gray took third in the long jump as well. The 400 relay of Tylor Smith, Gray, Nick Brothers and Sam Pincock took third (46.8) and the 800 relay team of Smith, Mike Horrigan, Stewart and Sam Pincock placed third (1:35.1).

For the girls, McSweeney won the 400 in 1:02.52 and the 200 in 27.8. Sparks took fourth in 1:04.3. Janine Stone won the 3,200 in 13:13. Tom was a double winner, placing first in the shot put (33-7) and winning the discus with an excellent throw of 119-1.

The 1,600 relay team of Kathryn Rogers, Amanda Benson, McSweeney and Laack won in 4:14 and the 800 relay team of Cassie Bowman, Benson, McSweeney and Christa Dixon won in 1:52.

Also for Carson, Benson took third in the 200 (28.3), Kristen Needenriep placd third in the 800 (2:46), Annie Brinson took second in the 1,600 (5:45), Rogers placed fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.0) and the 300 hurdles (50.1), Ashley Terry took second and Nicole Scott placed fourth in the high jump and Sandra McAlman placed third in the triple jump (32-2 1/2).

The 400 relay team of Bowman, Dixon, Deelyn Leigh and Benson placed fourth in 55.1.

"We had some good times," Carson coach Todd Ackerman said. "I was happy with George and Sinead in the 400, those are actually pretty good times."

Considering the recent weather, Ackerman said he was also pleased with the performance of his pole vaulters. "Our vaulters, I thought, did very well," he said.
