The Carson High softball team went from being an ugly duckling to a beautiful swan in a matter of 24 hours and the end result was its biggest win of the season.

Carson stunned three-time defending state champion Wooster 9-3 on Tuesday. The Senators were coming off a 12-0 loss to Douglas on Monday.

Beth Henry homered, doubled and had five RBIs and Nichole Monge added a homer and a double while Mandy Carvin pitched a complete game for the win.

The win did come against a Wooster team that was without pitching ace Brianne McGowan. But Carson coach John Sullivan said that took nothing away from the victory as the Senators became the first Nevada team to beat the Colts this year.

"It's a big win for us," Sullivan said. "The girls went from being ugly to being real pretty. It showed a lot of character after taking a hard loss against Douglas to come back and beat the state champions."

The win also gave Carson an important win in the playoff race as the Senators improved to 9-6 in the Sierra League. "It really helps us in the playoff picture," Sullivan said.

Making the win more impressive was Carson fell behind 3-0 in the first inning when Wooster took advantage of three errors and three hits.

Sullivan said he was thinking, "Here we go again. It looked like we were in trouble in the first inning."

But Carvin held Wooster to two hits while striking out six the rest of the way and Carson backed her up with strong offense and defense.

"When you do those things against most teams you'll get a win," Sullivan said.

Carson scored four runs in the third. Kaitie Vidovich, Liz Rankl and Lindsey Perondi all walked and Lindsay Farnworth followed with an RBI sacrifice fly. Henry then belted a two-run single and eventually scored on an error.

Monge's solo shot made it 5-3 in the fourth and Henry's solo shot made it 6-3 in the fifth. In the sixth, Perondi singled and Henry hit a two-run triple to highlight a three-run rally.

Perondi went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Henry was 3-for-4, Monge went 2-for-4, Ariadne Gonzalez had a hit and an RBI and Rankl and Vidovich each added a hit for Carson.
