Senate named Legislature after Jacobsen

The Nevada Senate voted Monday to name the Legislative Building after retired Sen. Lawrence Jacobsen.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio, R-Reno, described Jacobsen as "the driving force for the construction of this building."

Jacobsen served longer in the Nevada Legislature than any other member -- a total of 40 years in the Senate and Assembly. He held practically every leadership position in the Legislature.

"Probably, this is the most significant recognition we could bestow," said Raggio.

The measure passed 16-4, opposed only by a small group of senators who said they mean absolutely no insult to Jacobsen, but that no individual's name should be on the Legislative Building.

"There is no legislative building in any state that is named for an individual," said Minority Leader Dina Titus, D-Las Vegas.
