Like Target and Home Depot before them, the new businesses in the Carson Valley Plaza are catching some flak for claiming to be located in Carson City.
Everybody knows they're in Douglas County. That's the whole flap -- they're across the county line, pouring sales-tax money into Douglas coffers and leaving the cupboard bare in Carson.
Several people have been calling the Nevada Appea to complain. Some claim it's even "false advertising" to say, as advertisements for the newly opened World Market do, "Come celebrate at our new Carson City store."
Well, the truth is they are in Carson City. At least, as far as the U.S. Postal Service is concerned.
The Carson Valley Plaza stores -- like Target, Home Depot, Wal-Mart and the residences in Indian Hills -- all have Carson City addresses.
It's just further proof that most of the world, including many people who live in Carson and Douglas, don't get that excited about which side of the county line they're on.
Yes, it makes a difference on tax revenues. It makes a difference on how you vote. It makes a difference which sheriff's department is going to respond, who is going to fill your potholes and where you're sending the kids to school.
But for most people, it's not going to make a difference in where they work and shop.
We do understand the ire of shoppers who feel a bit betrayed, and who prefer to spend their tax dollars at home. But we're clinging to a regional view of the marketplace -- one that says a little cooperation can mean development benefits both Carson and Douglas.
If anything, we're more miffed at Kmart for total abandonment. And happier to be shopping in a Carson City Zip Code than a Reno one.
Besides, address-watchers will also note that businesses such as the Moonlite Bunnyranch, located in Mound House, carry a Carson address too. So there's all kinds of commerce going on in Carson City, depending on where you draw the line.
