Carson girls hoops rout South Tahoe

The Carson High girls basketball team overcame a slow start to pull away for a 56-26 win at South Tahoe on Saturday.

Carson led just 9-8 after one quarter, but gradually pulled away throughout the rest of the game.

"I thought they started out a little bit sluggish," Carson coach Alana Williams said. "Then they picked up the defense."

The Senators led 22-12 at halftime and 37-21 after three quarters before outscoring South Tahoe 17-5 in the fourth quarter. Katie Kotter scored all nine of Carson's points in the first quarter on her way to scoring 25 points.

"She just had her inside-outside game going," Williams said. Williams also said Kotter was able to spark the offense with several steals.

Ciarra Christian scored seven points and Rachel Winters and Tabitha Adams each added six points for Carson.

CAPUCHINO 65, CARSON BOYS 47

The second and fourth quarters were the downfall for the Carson High boys basketball team (1-2) in its final game of the Riordan High Crusader Classic in San Francisco. Carson trailed just 13-11 after one quarter but fell behind 34-23 at halftime. Carson was still within striking distance before being outscored 20-12 in the fourth quarter.

"The second and fourth quarters got away from us," Carson coach Bruce Barnes said.

Jason Alcasas scored 17 points and Rory Wunsch added 12 points for the Senators. Carson played without Brian Welch, who had an ankle injury. Welch is questionable for Tuesday's game against Fallon at Carson and it's hoped he'll be able to play in this week's Carson Valley Classic.

"I think it was very good competition," Barnes said. "Obviously it gave us an idea of what we need to work on, that's for sure."

ST. FRANCIS 59, GALENA BOYS 41

After taking a seven-hour bus ride through the snow, the Galena boys basketball team had a tough time at Bay Area power St. Francis.

St. Francis led 32-13 at halftime. Derek Lorenzen scored 18 points for Galena in three quarters.

"We probably played like I expected," Galena coach Tom Maurer said. "These are the kinds of trips we need to take."

Galena was coming off a loss on Friday to Utah power Lone Peak. "I think we played two very good teams this weekend," Maurer said.

YERINGTON GOES 4-1

The Yerington boys basketball team outscored Pyramid Lake 40-14 in the second half and overtime to win the title at the Hawthorne Tournament. Yerington trailed 33-22 at halftime but came back to tie the score 45-45, then outscored Pyramid Lake 17-2 in overtime.

Four players scored in double figures for Yerington: Dylan Johnson scored 18 points, John Little had 15 points, Jay Sciarani had 12 points and Derek Lee added 10 points.

Little led Yerington with 14 points in a 67-34 win over Lund, Lee scored 12 points in a 53-37 win over White Pine and Sciarani scored 14 points in a 61-40 win over Smith Valley.

In a 46-37 loss to Virginia City, Yerington was just 3-of-7 from the foul line while Virginia City hit 18-of-34 free throws. Yerington was called for 27 fouls while Yerington was called for eight.

CARSON JV GIRLS 46, SOUTH TAHOE 6

A highlight for the Carson junior varsity girls basketball team in its win over South Tahoe was the play of Chelsea Owen-Self, who is deaf. Owen-Self had several rebounds, several assists and several steals in the game.

Kaitlin Burroughs led Carson with 12 points, Sami Valerius had eight rebounds and Sinead McSweeney also had an outstanding game on the boards with five offensive rebounds.

CARSON FROSH GIRLS 58, SOUTH TAHOE 4

Hannah Works had 13 points and seven rebounds, Sarah Metcalf had two points and five rebounds, Megan Kilty had nine points and five steals, Whitney Hoot had seven points, five assists and five rebounds, Brittany DeRosa had eight points and four steals, Rayleen Kennison had four points and five rebounds, Kendra Simms had three points and five assists, Sara Evanshad five rebounds, five assists and three steals, Jennifer Atchian scored four points, Tiffani Barber had seven points, five assists and three steals and Elysa Gutierrez had two points and three rebounds for the Carson freshman girls basketball team.
