The Carson High wrestling team tuned up for a tough early season test with a 74-6 win over Sparks on Wedneday at home.
Carson will compete on Friday and Saturday in the Coast Classic in Scotts Valley, Calif. Forty-five teams will be in the event including Central Section power Madera, which is the defending champion. Madera also placed sixth in last year's Sierra Nevada Classic in Reno.
Gilroy, ranked No. 8 in California, and the defending Sierra Nevada Classic champion, is also in the event. Gilroy placed second in last year's tournament. Also in the event is Los Gatos, which placed 10th in last year's Sierra Nevada Classic.
"There's some tough teams that are going to be there," Carson coach Dean Schmanski said.
Against Sparks, Owen Craugh (103 pounds), Mark Graham (112), Kyle Banko (125), Travis Lamborn (145), Micah Whitcome (152) and Chris Ceccarelli (189) all won by pin. Joe Roman (171) won by technical fall after the match was stopped with him leading 16-1 in the second period.
Ahron Osheroff (135) overcame a 12-8 deficit going into the third period to win 18-13. "Our conditioning really showed in the third period," Schmanski said.
Other winners for Carson were Eric Aguilera (130), Cody Albee (140), Loren Wooldridge (160), Nick Shine (215) and Jason Klug (heavyweight).
"We look pretty good as a team right now but the real test is this weekend," Schmanski said.
