The Carson High wrestling team has been able to hold its own against tough competition at the Coast Classic in Scotts Valley, Calif.

Carson was in ninth place out of 45 teams after the first day of the event on Friday. The event features many of Central and Northern California's top programs. Four Senator upperweight wrestlers have stayed unbeaten to reach the semifinals in the tournament, which concludes today: Joe Roman (171 pounds), Chris Ceccarelli (189), Nick Shine (215) and Jason Klug (heavyweight).

Seven Senator wrestlers are still alive in the event. Also alive are Ahron Osheroff (135), Loren Wooldridge (160) and Micah Whitcome (152).

"We're seeing some good competition," Carson coach Dean Schmanski said. "I think it was kind of an eye opener for the younger wrestlers."

Schmanski said his team is about where he expected. "I kind of thought we would be in the top 10," he said. "I thought we wrestled pretty well."

Others who wrestled well for Carson were Travis Lamborn, who reached the quarterfinals, and Eric Aguilera, who went 2-2.

Shine has been dominant and has yet to go to the second round in any of his matches. He pinned all three of his opponents in the first round.
