Carson City sheriff's deputies Thursday recovered the empty cash deposit bag snatched from a Gottschalks clerk during a robbery the night before.

Sheriff's Detective Richard Mendoza said the bag was found in a restroom at Red's Old 395 Grill after it closed Wednesday night. Workers reported finding the bag Thursday morning after reading a description in the newspaper.

Mendoza said investigators are reviewing surveillance from Red's to determine who left the bag.

"There is a suspect in the case, but no arrests have been made," he said.

The robber entered through the south doors of the department store and confronted a hair salon clerk, who had just put an undisclosed amount of cash and checks into the deposit bag.

The bandit snatched the bag, making his way out the south doors.

When the clerk followed, the man turned to him and said, "Back off," motioning with the black bag as though he had a weapon, police said.

The clerk told police that the man got into a faded, grayish-blue, 1980s-model, four-door car and drove east, leaving the parking lot onto Stewart Street.

There was no license plate on the front of the vehicle, and the rear plate had a Nevada sunset design.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Department detective division at 887-2020, ext. 1400.
