A 101-degree high temperature on Wednesday broke a 25-year Carson City record.

But cooler temperatures should be on the way beginning today, according to the National Weather Service.

"We should be done with the sizzling stuff for a little bit and get more in the way of showers," said forecaster Steve Goldstein. "We should be a good 5 to 7 degrees cooler.

According to Goldstein, the old record of 98 degrees was set in 1978.

Reno also broke a 101-degree record with a 104-degree high temperature on Wednesday.

The series of storms began with moisture from the Gulf of Mexico left over from hurricane Claudette, and the flow of soggy air has continued to bring thunderstorms.

After a brief respite, storm activity was expected to pick up across the region again today, Friday and Saturday, forecasters said.
