Nevada drops close game to San Diego, 1-0

For the third consecutive game the Nevada Wonders played well enough to win but couldn't score. Meanwhile, the opposition found a way to.

Roby Monroe scored in the 7th minute after following up a penalty kick that was saved by Sebastian Rowe as the San Diego Gauchos beat Nevada 1-0 on Saturday night at Gauchos Stadium in San Diego.

It was the Gauchos' first win since a 3-2 season-opening victory against the California Gold on April 5. San Diego, a Pro Select League team, outshot the Wonders 9-8 in a match that general manager Randy Roser felt his team deserved to win.

"It's just the same old story," Roser said. "We had lots of chances but couldn't find a way to score. I think they thought because we were a PDL team that it was going to be an easy game. But they saw that we could play."

Nevada's best chance to score came in the 70th minute when Ian Miller's cross found the head of Chris Blackburn. But his attempt never found the net. Rowe made three saves for the Wonders (1-9-1), who are still in fourth place in the Southwest Division Standings. The BYU Cougars, who lost to Orange County 2-0 on Friday night, remain in last place with a 1-8 record.

"It's unfortunate that we have to keep making excuses but we're really getting better," Roser said. "Seven or eight games ago we were getting beat up."

Nevada's next game is Saturday against the California Gold, another PSL team. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Carson High soccer field.
