120 YEARS AGO

Mr. Balford of the mint, who decorated the Opera House in Virginia City, lost $2,500 worth of flags. He had been collecting the flags of the world for the past 10 or 15 years and spent more than $6,000 in cash for them. As he had the only complete collection in America, they were worth at least $10,000. The fire destroyed many of the rarest flags in the world.

100 YEARS AGO

The Chronicle: Funeral for the late Edward P. Holmes took place at Virginia City at St. Mary's, with members of the Legislature attending in a body to pay their last respects. It was heavily attended on foot and carriage by the Miners Union, Hose Co., etc. The funeral cortege was the largest ever seen in Gold Hill. A pillow bearing the words "Nevada Assembly First Session -- True to Labor," rested among flowers that required extra carriage to carry.

70 YEARS AGO

Willard Smith, assemblyman from Lincoln County, says, "There isn't a restaurant bill-of-fare in town that hasn't had every item on it marked up 10 or 15 percent since the Legislature convened. I don't think the state employees' salaries should be cut."

50 YEARS AGO

The new state flag proposed is a banner of three vertical stripes of blue, white and silver-gray. Sponsors are Ken Johnson, R-Ormsby (Carson City) and John Robbins, D-Elko.

20 YEARS AGO

Las Vegas Review-Journal picture: Donald W. Reynolds, founder and president of Don-Ray Media, presents a check from his foundation for $125,000 to John McBride, chairman of the University of Nevada Board of Regents, to establish the Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism and Center for Advanced Media Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno.

10 YEARS AGO

Minden -- Two special events for Douglas County are "Magic of Recreation" and the fourth annual Kids Fishing Derby.
