Three rural communities in Nevada have been awarded grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development Office.

Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., said rants are vital because, since the federal government owns nearly 90 percent of rural lands, those areas have a very limited tax base to provide funding for public services.

The Lincoln County School District will receive $6,490 to help buy equipment for the Panaca Elementary School playground. Esmeralda County's Goldfield Fire Department will get $7,500 to buy extrication equipment. The Wells Family Resource Center will receive $12,230 to install playground equipment.
