Carson Advocates for Cancer Care get donation from Clear Creek Bowmen

The Clear Creek Bowmen of Carson City are donating $1,000 this year to Carson Advocates for Cancer Care, thanks to a resident named Doc Schulz.

"The Bowmen had a range on Clear Creek. Ray and Doc Schultz owned the land," said Jim Davis, club president. "Doc's wife had some health problems and we wanted to give him some money, but Doc wanted us to donate it for cancer research."

Davis said their archery range has since moved to east Carson City, but the tradition lives, the money is generated during the club's July competition which includes T-shirts, prizes, a raffle and lunch.

A group of about 100 sportsmen, the Bowmen has been donating the proceeds for 15 years.

"For awhile, we donated the money to the American Cancer Society, but Doc wanted us to give it to a local organization," he said. "Doc and his wife are both gone, but we've continued to donate every year in his name."

The only agency of its kind in Northern Nevada, Carson Advocates raises money for cancer patients who can't pay for medications and doctor bills.

Medicare and Medicaid often won't cover medications associated with cancer and needy patients must often choose between food and medications. Advocates pays those medication bills and in some cases, will pay insurance premiums if the insurance will pick up those costs.

The group also promotes education and brings cancer victims in touch with those who've had experience with the disease.
