Nevada firefighters battle Southern California blazes

Western Nevada firefighters are in Southern California to help battle fires driven by Santa Ana winds.

Bureau of Land Management spokesman Mark Struble said the Carson City field office is sending two Type 3 engines and four fire managers to Southern California.

"We would be sending more, but our fire season is over here and we don't have the personnel," he said. "Our seasonal personnel have long gone back to work or school."

Struble said it appears Southern California firefighters could use the help.

"It sounds pretty bad down there," he said.

Battalion Chief Dan Shirey said Carson City is short firefighting personnel but would like to send someone south as soon as the department can.

Storey County Fire Capt. Ron Adkins said the department sent two brush trucks along with a Reno Fire Department strike team.

"They left Sunday night and they are working on the Cedar Fire," he said.

Central Lyon County Fire District Chief John Gillenwater said seven professional and volunteer firefighters, an engine and a brush truck were headed south of San Diego to work on one of the fires.

The Reno Fire Department sent six structure engines and 26 firefighters to Southern California, according to Reno Fire Chief Chuc Lowden.
