GARDNERVILLE -- Janet Geary, an 18-year veteran of the newspaper business, has been named publisher of the Record-Courier.
Peter Starren, general manager and group publisher of Tahoe-Carson Area Newspapers, made the announcement to the Record-Courier staff Tuesday.
For the past 3 1/2 years, Geary has worked in Carson City as classified advertising manager for the newspaper group, which includes the Record-Courier, Nevada Appeal and four sister newspapers in the Lake Tahoe area.
Previously, she was a classified manager at the Statesman Journal in Salem, Ore. Geary also has worked as a retail sales manager and advertising director.
A Carson City resident for the past few months, Geary previously lived in Douglas County for nearly four years and plans to move back to the county soon.
Geary has lived in Nevada most of her life, growing up in Las Vegas. She has two sons, both living in Portland, Ore. Josh Todd is an Internet sales manager, and Troy Larkin is a nursing-training manager.
Geary, who comes from a family of seven brothers and three sisters, enjoys traveling, raising orchids, volunteering and collecting antique jewelry.
"I am tremendously excited about taking over the reins of the Record-Courier," Geary said. "I look forward to getting to know the employees better and to meet more of the wonderful people who make up the Carson Valley. Please come by and say 'hello' -- my door is always open."
Geary replaces Peter Kostes, who was promoted this summer to associate publisher of the Nevada Appeal and group editor for Tahe-Carson Area Newspapers. Kostes had been at the Record-Courier since 1999.
