Man to plead in July 19 shooting

A Reno man is expected to plead guilty to a charge stemming from a July 19 shooting.

Jose Luis Chavez, 22, who waived his preliminary hearing Monday, has been in custody since his arrest Aug. 28 on the charge of principal to attempted murder.

According to police reports, Chavez was driving the vehicle from which another unidentified man jumped and opened fire on Omar Segura, 20, of Carson City as he entered his vehicle in a parking lot at the Foothill Garden Apartments on East Long Street.

Witnesses stated the shooter fired two shots, before Segura drove across the lawn and escaped from the lot. The shooter fired another three shots as he chased the vehicle on foot, reports state.

No one in the Segura's car was injured. Two bullet holes were found in the windshield and one in the driver's door.

Deputy District Attorney Tom Armstrong said Chavez, who has no arrest record, will plead guilty to the lesser charge of accessory to battery with a deadly weapon.

Chavez, who has been in the United States for 12 years on a resident visa, has a hold placed on him by Immigration and Naturalization Services because of the felony charge. He could be deported to Mexico, Armstrong said.
