Douglas softball splits

RENO - For the past several weeks, the Douglas varsity softball team has been finding just enough to win.

On Saturday afternoon, they just ran out.

Wooster's Jackie Millsap belted a game-ending 2-run single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Colts handed the Lady Tigers their first Sierra League loss of the season, 8-7 at Wooster.

That's not to say the Tigers weren't close to ending it several times before in the second game of the doubleheader.

Douglas took one-run leads into the bottom of the seventh, eighth and 10th innings before Wooster prevailed.

"We had numerous opportunities to end the darn thing and we didn't get it done," Douglas head coach Todd Wilcks said. "Our execution was poor, our focus was poor, we left too many runner on base. We didn't get it done, that's the bottom line."

Brittany Puzey pitched all 10 innings for the Tigers, striking out 11.

She also hit a solo home run to help out her own effort.

Freshman Tisha Luken set the Tigers up with what look like it would be the game winning hit in the 10th inning, belting a one-out single to score Sam Willson.

"She's been a very, very pleasant surprise," Wilcks said. "For her to come in, in a situation like that and get a base hit in a such a big game like that...she has got a very bright future, she's done a great job."

Puzey retired the first two batters in the bottom-half of the inning before surrendering a single and bringing up Wooster's Andrea Lazarri, who had hit six home runs in six games heading into Saturday.

The Tigers intentionally walked Lazarri, bringing up Millsap, who ended the game.

"It's a move we had to make," Wilcks said of Lazarri. "She is one of the best hitters in the state. We know what she can do. She has a big bat and she has been hot the last couple of weeks."

Douglas did pick up a win in the first game of the day, a 5-3 victory over the Colts.

Kayla Dunn hit two home runs in the game for the Tigers and Puzey hit another home run.

"We hit the ball fairly well the first game and it was nice to see a couple leave the park but base hits win games, not home runs," Wilcks said. "All we needed was about two more base hits and it wouldn't have even been close in the second."

Kellei Kizer pitched a dominant complete-game for the Tigers on the mound.

Douglas next takes on South Tahoe at the lake Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
