In possibly the longest sudden-death face-off in Step-Up history, first-time X Gamer Jeremy McGrath outlasted defending champ Matt Buyten of Carson City to win his first gold medal in the Moto X Step Up Competition on Friday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Buyten, who won his first gold medal last year in an upset of defending champ Tommy Clowers, rode the entire sudden-death portion of the event with a separated shoulder. His right sholder popped out on the landing of his first 30-foot attempt, and again later in the night. The medical staff rushed to his side, popped it back into place each time, and Buyten hopped back on his bike and continued riding.

Moto X heavy-hitters Brian Deegan and Mike Metzger were eliminated early in the contest, and Clowers bowed out shortly after.

McGrath cleared 33 feet, six inches for the win, while Buyten cleared 33-0 in taking second.
