The Carson Valley Hurricanes 12 and under softball team won the California NSA Fall Ball Championship Qualifier held last weekend.
The win qualified the Hurricanes for the year-end tournament to be held Nov. 27 and 28 in Fresno, Calif.
The Hurricanes beat the Sacramento Dynasty 18-2, the Stockton Storm 9-2 and the Yuba Sutter Sting 13-55 to earn the No. 1 seed in elimination play. The Hurricanes beat the Dynasty 18-2 in the semifinals and the Storn 10-2 in the finals.
The Hurricanes had a .615 average, .738 slugging percentage, stole 49 bases and struck out only seven times in 148 at bats.
Maddy Gilbert led the team with an .875 average and a triple. Stephanie Harper and Rebecca Trute each hit a home run. Harper had five RBI, Jourdan Bourke had two doubles and Donna Judd, Katrina Morgan and Harper each added a double. Emily Weaver had nine hits and Judd, Burke, Kat Morgan and Kenzie Cole all stole six bases.
Harper led a pitching staff that held opponents to nine earned runs as she pitched 12.1 innings, allowing six hits with a 2.65 earned run average and 11 strikeouts. Megan Mitchell and Cole rounded out the pitching.
Katrina Morgan and Laura Wood were the catchers, Mitchell, Harpher and Mackenzie Cauley played first, Judd and Burke played second, Weaver and Trute played shortsop, Burke and Gilbert played third and Brenna White, Jenna Kochamp, Trute, Cauley, Judd and Cole played in the outfield.
It was the fourth tournament title for the Hurricanes, who finished each event unbeaten. The Hurricanes have a 28-8 overall mark and have tournaments left in South Tahoe and Jackson, Calif.
The Hurricanes are looking to have 14 and under and 12 and under A teams next year. Frank Maye, who has more than 35 years of coaching experience, will coach both teams.
