Winners in Buick Scramble named

DAYTON - PGA Professional Ken Mayberry led his El Macero Country Club team to the gross division title while Doug Hanson's Lockeford Springs Golf Club captured the net division championship at Monday's final Buick Scramble Northern California PGA Sectional Championship at Dayton Valley Country Club.


The two winning teams advanced to compete at the 2004 Buick Scramble National Championships in Orlando, Fla., to take place October 7-10.


Fifteen five-person teams (four amateurs and one PGA Professional) competed in the Buick Scramble PGA Sectional Championship at Dayton Valley Golf Club. Each team participating in the tournament advanced through their respective local championships earlier in the season.


PGA Professional Mayberry's El Macero Country Club of El Macero carded a 16-under-par 56 to take a one stroke victory in the gross division over Dennis Tuhn's San Jose Municipal, who recorded a 57. Winning amateur participants included Tim Cronan, Doug Malinoff, James Plumb and Doug Gedestad.


In the net division, PGA Professional Hanson's Lockeford Springs Golf Club of Lodi fired a net 18-under-par 54 to win the net division by two shots over Kenny Collins' Belmont Country Club. Winning amateur participants for Lockeford Springs included Rick Carrington, Robert Carrington, Chris Shepherd and Randy Shepherd.

El Macero Country Club and Lockeford Springs Golf Club will advance to compete against 212 other teams from throughout the United States and Canada at the Buick Scramble National Championships in Orlando.


Buick Scramble Honorary Chairman Tiger Woods is scheduled to appear at the national championships to award the trophies to the 2004 Buick Scramble National Champions.


Now entering its third decade as the world's largest amateur golf tournament, the Buick Scramble hosts more than 1600 local championships annually. Sanctioned by the PGA of America, 214 teams (107 in net and gross divisions) will compete for national championship honors and a purse of more than $285,000 (cash for PGA Professionals, gift certificates for amateurs).
