Newmont starts work on new gold mine in Nevada

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Newmont Mining Corp. began construction this week for the controversial Phoenix gold mine on a site where copper and gold have been mined off and on since the 1860s. "We're cleaning up historic mining and starting new mining. It's a very positive thing," said Wayne Murdy, Newmont's chairman and chief executive officer.

Report: Housing starts plummeted in November

WASHINGTON - The number of housing units on which builders began work plunged 13.1 percent in November from the previous month, the biggest monthly drop in nearly 11 years, according to the Commerce Department. The drop was steeper than predicted, but industry economists said the report did not signal a fundamental weakness in the housing market. The report does suggest that the hot industry is cooling, however, and will contribute less to the U.S. economy going forward, they said.

Survey: Growth slowing in Vegas

LAS VEGAS - A snapshot of the Southern Nevada economy found fewer new residents moving in, and new home and commercial building permits down sharply compared with a year ago. But seven other growth categories charted by the Southern Nevada Index of Leading Economic Indicators posted gains, which helped the index climb to 130.05 in November, up from 128.78 the previous month.

Dot1web sues bank for account irregularities

INCLINE VILLAGE - Incline Village-based Dot1web announced today that it has filed a lawsuit against Nevada Security Bank. Dot1web is alleging the bank is responsible for bounced payroll checks and other account irregularities related to the technology company's account, which adversely affected its employees and business in December 2002 and led to the company's collapse. The suit was filed Nov. 24 in Washoe District Court.
