The Carson High girls basketball team used a balanced scoring attack and strong foul shooting to break through for a 51-38 win over Frankin of Stockton, Calif., on Saturday in the final day of the Oakridge Trojan Classic near Placerville, Calif.
Andrea Hoff scored 14 points, Nicole Scott had 13 points, Sarah Johnston had 11 points and Kelli Weyrick added eight points for Carson.
"There was more balanced scoring which I was happy with," Carson girls coach Alana Williams said. "We're starting to get a more balanced attack."
Johnson was 6-of-6 from the foul line and hit a three-pointer and Weyrick was 6-of-7 from the line. The Senators were 18-of-25 from the line. "This trip really helped us in getting us heading in the right direction," Williams said.
Dylan Johnson and Ryan Rife combined to score 32 points and the Yerington High boys basketball team used a suffocating defense to post a 53-43 Northern 3A victory at home against North Tahoe on Saturday afternoon.
Johnson overcame early foul trouble to score 14 of his 17 points in the second half and Rife scored 15 as the Lions improved their record to 3-0 in league, 9-1 overall for the season.
The Lions were effectively defensively as they jumped out to a 27-20 halftime lead. And one of the keys was the play of 5-foot-11 Scott Veil against North Tahoe's 6-9 post, Ken Munsterman, who scored only two points.
"We played great team defense, and Scott kept the big kid off the board," coach Daron Wildermuth said. "He (Veil) just did an awesome job defensively and with his rebounding."
Veil finished the game with eight rebounds.
Sam Fahrner led all scorers with 18 points for North Tahoe (0-2 league, 5-5 overall).
Coupled with a 64-54 win at Tahoe-Truckee on Friday night, the Lions now have sole possession of first-place early in the Northern 3A race.
"To be 3-0 in league going into the Christmas break, this is a good start for us," coach Daron Wildermuth said. "Beating Truckee up there was really huge."
Jeremy Means scored 16 points, Rife 15 and Johnson 10 to lead a balanced Yerington offense.
The Lions return to action at the Rite of Passage Winter Games Monday against Sierra Ridge Academy in a 1 p.m. game at Yerington Intermediate School.
