The High Sierra Wild Pee Wee ice hockey team turned in two solid efforts in defeats to the California Cougars over the weekend in NORCAL action in South Tahoe.

The Wild lost both games 4-2. Among the highlights was the play of Carson City's Matt Scherer at goalie on Sunday. Scherer had an excellent game, posting spectacular saves on his way to making 33 saves.

In Saturday's game, the Wild were able to take a 2-0 lead on goals by Jimmy Thorngren and Jordan Devlin. Payton Guttry, Minden's Austin Hoyt and Gardnerville's Chris Rogusky all had assists. Goalie Ty O'Neil posted 19 saves.

On Sunday, The Wild weren't able to score until the third period when excellent passes by Niko Nakamura and Cooper Stanley set up a goal by Rogusky. Thorngren later weaved through the Cougar defense for an unassisted goal.

A pivotal moment came late in the second period with the Cougars leading 1-0. A minute after a Cougar shot, the referee overruled the linesman and credited the Cougars with a goal.

Players in the area insisted the shot had been deflected by Scherer and struck the post.
