Boehnke, Carson boys win state crowns

Carson High boys skiing coach Jack Reinhardt had the perfect description when describing his team's performance in the state championships.

"We ripped," Reinhardt said. Mats Boehnke and Danny Rotter finished 1-2 to lead Carson to the team title in the slalom on Saturday at Mt. Rose's East Bowl. The Senators will go for the overall state title today when the giant slalom is held.

Carson edged Reno High for the slalom title with 464 points. Reno was second with 462. McQueen was third with 453 and Galena was fourth with 367.

The Senator girls also had a solid showing, finishing fifth in the slalom with 338 points. As expected Galena was in first, but was being challenged by Reno. The Grizzlies had 462 points and were followed by Reno (456), McQueen (415) and Wooster (408).

Boehnke, a freshman won the boys title in 26.2 seconds while Rotter took second in 26.95. For Galena's girls, Astrida Griswold won the state title in 26.83.

The effort for the Carson boys was made more impressive by the fact that two of its top skiers didn't score. Devon Anderson was disqualified and James Reavis didn't finish.

But Brett Andersen was able to pick up the slack, placing sixth for Carson in 29.84. Carson also had strong finishes from Rob Ghiglieri (14th, 31.27), Caleb McCoy (18th, 31.71) and Robbie Beasom (22nd, 32.11).

Galena's top finisher was Torry Weiss, who finished 11th in 30.55. Other local finishers were: J.P. Wood, Galena, 27th, 32.80; Clynton Herbert, Galena, 29th, 33.13; Robby Liebherr, Carson, 31st, 33.26; Ryan Cobb, Galena, 32nd, 33.30; Mike Cooke, Carson, 35th, 33.88; Chase Houston, Galena, 39th, 34.78. Galena's Trevor Rowley and Matt McMullen didn't finish.

For Galena's girls, Jenny Burrrows was fifth in 29.35, Ali Agee took ninth in 31.06, Danielle Bouchard was 13th in 32.46, Siani Nau placed 15th in 32.62, Leslie Robinson was 20th, Lauren Robinson took 22nd in 35.59 and Danielle Smith was 28th in 37.88.

Carson's top finisher was Jessica Goddard, who was 30th in 38.18. Other local finishers were: Greta Schnaser, Carson, 32nd, 38.88; Nichole Monge, Carson, 33rd, 39.18; Aysia Roberts, Carson, 35th, 39.60; Krista Wisbar, Carson, 37th, 40.79; Megan Carter, Carson, 42nd, 42.34. Carson's Sydney Parker and Brooke Conway and Galena's Nancy Burrows and Jackie Schwartz didn't finish.

The girls race will be held at 10 a.m. and the boys race will start at 1 p.m. today at Mt. Rose's East Bowl.
