Inmate pregnant by guard gives birth

A prison inmate who says she was impregnated by a private-prison guard gave birth Monday afternoon to a baby boy at Carson-Tahoe Hospital.

Korinda Martin has been the subject of an investigation by the Department of Corrections since July 14, when the state was notified she was pregnant.

Because she had been in the Southern Nevada Women's Correctional Center in North Las Vegas since Dec. 10, 2001, prison officials say there is no doubt she became pregnant after being incarcerated.

She was transferred to the prison's regional medical facility in Carson City immediately after the pregnancy was confirmed.

Deputy Corrections Director Glen Whorton said officials were awaiting the birth of the child so that DNA tests could confirm the identity of the father -- believed to be a guard employed by Corrections Corp. of America.

Corrections Corp. is a private company that has the contract to operate the women's prison for the state. In a lawsuit, Martin named a former guard as the father.

Whorton said the state will prosecute if it is determined a crime was committed. Sexual contact between guards and inmates is listed as a felony under Nevada law.

Martin is serving up to 10 years for robbery and a consecutive sentence of up to four years for coercion after the robbery. She is eligible for parole on the first sentence in July 2005.
