To contend for championships, teams don't always have to be on. They're just on when they have to be.
With that in mind the Galena High boys basketball team erased a four-point deficit with six minutes left in the game and outscored McQueen 19-4 in the fourth quarter on its way to a 47-38 win on Saturday at McQueen. Galena improved to 4-1 in the High Desert League while the Lancers fell to 1-4.
"Just like we talked about before we knew it was going to be a tough game," Galena coach Tom Maurer said. "We were just so flat. I would just label it as a great defensive effort."
McQueen outscored Galena 18-8 in the third quarter to take a 34-28 lead. But the Grizzlies held McQueen to one basket and two free throws in the fourth quarter.
After going just 2-for-5 from the foul line through the first three quarters, Galena went 9-for-13 from the line in the fourth quarter.
Derek Lorenzen scored 14 points and Bobby Contreras added 13 points. "He had a great game," said Maurer about Contreras.
Ryan Bristol also had a solid game and play the whole game despite continuing to play on a broken bone in his foot. Maurer also praised the play of Chad Seidenstricker, who added six points.
GALENA GIRLS 52, MCQUEEN 46
Caitlin Anderson hit 11-of-12 free throws on her way to scoring 25 points for the Galena girls basketball team (4-1). The Grizzlies outscored McQueen 16-5 in the second quarter to take a 28-18 halftime lead and held on from there. Caitlin Crofts added 10 points for Galena.
YERINGTON BOYS 65, FERNLEY 60
Yerington overcame a 30-23 halftime deficit and made its free throws down the stretch to pull out the win against Fernley. Jay Sciarani scored 21 points and Ryan Rice added 16 points for Yerington. Mike Lambeth scored 20 points and Derek Henry added 18 points for Fernley.
