Arthur Allen 'Al' Bishop

A memorial for Arthur Allen "Al" Bishop, 76, of Bayview, Idaho, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Yates Funeral Home's Hayden Chapel in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. A reception will follow in the chapel's gathering room.

Mr. Bishop died Jan. 23, 2004, at home. He was born Aug. 12, 1927, in New Plymouth, Idaho, to Lewis J. and Myrle Conkle Bishop. He spent his childhood in Emmett, Idaho.

He attended high school in Stibnite, Idaho, before traveling to Alaska at age 16 to work as the cook on the fishing tender "Chignik" for G.P. Halferty & Co.

He joined the U.S. Marines Aug. 10, 1945, was stationed in San Diego, Calif., and discharged Oct. 20, 1946.

He married Frances Laverne Penner on Jan. 4, 1947, in Emmett, Idaho.

He returned to Alaska as the skipper of the "Flicka," then moved to Stibnite, where he became a shovel operator. He moved to Kamiah and Granveville, both in Idaho, before settling in Carson City from 1956 to 1980.

Mr. Bishop was very active in Little League for six years and was its president for three years. He worked for Savage Construction Co. as a shovel operator until 1967, when he started Bishop Construction Co. In 1980, he moved to Bayview, Idaho, where he enjoyed working on his property, fishing for salmon and listening to bluegrass music.

Among his survivors are his wife of Bayview; sons Gary of Fairfield, Iowa, and Rick of Bayview; daughters Pam Harris of Sparks and Debra Bishop of Spokane, Wash.; eight grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; sister, Melvina Shaffer of California; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Burial will be in Athol, Idaho.
