Gas prices up for second week in a row, to $1.93 per gallon

WASHINGTON - The retail price of gasoline rose for the second week in a row, climbing to nearly $1.93 per gallon, after declining during the five previous weeks, the Energy Department reported Monday. The government survey said the average price nationwide of regular-grade gasoline rose 1.1 cent to $1.928 per gallon last week. Prices are 40.4 cents higher than a year ago.

Nevada unemployment up slightly in June

The state's unemployment rate increased one tenth of a percent between May and June, to 4.2 percent, as schools closed and the number of unemployed Nevadans jumped by nearly 10,000. Gov. Kenny Guinn said Monday the economy remained strong despite "the usual decline" in state and local government employment that's tied to the close of the school year.

A retreat in food and energy costs caused the drop in the Producer Price Index, the biggest in a year, the Labor Department reported Thursday. That came after wholesale costs shot up in the prior two months, reflecting sharply higher prices for energy and food. Wholesale prices had risen by 0.7 percent in April and by 0.8 percent in May.

Jobless claims plunge last week to lowest level since Oct. 2000

WASHINGTON (AP) -The number of new people signing up for jobless benefits dropped last week to the lowest level in more than three years, a potentially encouraging sign for a labor market experiencing a bumpy recovery. The Labor Department reported Thursday that new applications for unemployment insurance plunged by a seasonally adjusted 39,000 to 310,000 for the week ending July 3. That marked the best showing since Oct. 8, 2000. The latest snapshot of the layoffs climate was better than economists were expecting. They were forecasting claims to decline to around 345,000.
