Officers are now using pedal power to patrol Carson City's quiet Capitol grounds.
Capitol Police recently purchased two police bicycles equipped with lights and special patrol functions, and started the program two weeks ago.
"I think it makes law enforcement more accessible," said Officer Richard Mraz. "It beats walking."
So far, the two officers and Chief Brad Valladon are finding it easier to reach parking and walking paths with the bikes.
The small department extended its bike patrol area to include the downtown area from the Nevada Railroad Museum to Washington Street and from Roop Street to the Governor's Mansion on Mountain Street.
"It puts officers in closer proximity to buildings," Valladon said. "It's really a mechanized foot patrol. In the park-type setting we're in, we're able to get into areas more often."
The bikes, purchased with state funds, will be used mostly during daylight hours.
Capitol Police bike officers are fully sworn peace officers, but rarely make arrests as crime is minimal on the state property, Valladon said.
The bikes will also allow officers to reach out to children and the visiting public, he said.
