The Nevada Comets 12 and under softball team went 4-1 to take second in an ASA Western World Series Qualifier held in Sacramento, Calif.
The Comets lost in the championship game 5-4 to the San Jose Sizzle, Cassie Vondrak pitched 5.2 innings and Kelly McKeegan pitched the last 1.2 inningts, striking out two.
Courtney Darby had a triple, home run and two RBI, Taylor Ker was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Erica McKenzie had a hit and an RBI and Ashley Collier and Becky Moore each added a hit.
Errors were a factor in the game. After playing excellent defense in winning their first four games, the Comets committed four errors in the championship game.
The Comets opened with a 2-1 win over the Roseville Slammers. Collier was the winning pitcher, throwing a two-hitter while walking just one. Ker drove home the winning run and Darby, Hailey Gadsby and Moore all added a hit.
The Comets then beat the NorCal Cruisers 2-1. McKeegan pitched a two-hitter for the win. Ker and Moore were each 2-for-3, Vondrak went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Darby, Mckenzie and Gadsby each added a hit and Terra Hughes drove home the winning run.
In game three, The Comets defeated the NorCal Elite 3-1. Vondrak pitched a two-hitter for the win. Vondrak was also 1-for-2 with two RBI, Moore went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Hughes, Collier and McKenzie all added a hit.
In game four, the Comets beat the Slammers 6-2. Vondrak was the winning pitcher, throwing a two-hitter.
Collier went 2-for-3, Ker had a triple and an RBI, McKenzie and Vondrak each had a hit and an RBI and McKeegan, Gadsby and Moore all added an RBI. For the tournament, Ker hit .500, Moore hit .417 and Vondrak hit .400.
