When it comes to twisting the laws of gravity, the extreme athletes of Xtreme Air have become more than just a little familiar with it over the last 10 years.
And this weekend at the Fuji Park Arena near Costco in Carson City, they will be twisting those laws all over the place in their Sick, Wild and Twisted Stunt Show.
"It's a lot of fun for the entire family," show coordinator and producer Shawn Goodner said. "It's good, clean, action-sport fun."
To try to cram the synopsis of the show into a nutshell would be about as effective as trying to harness the energy and talent of one of its performers.
The show boasts anything from synchronized trampoline acts and athletes plunging nearly 100 feet into an air bag to a catapult machine capable of launching individuals 50-feet in the air and a man who can jump his wheelchair across gaps of up to 40 feet.
"It's really a collection of the whole action sports scene," Goodner said. "It's not just a variety show. Everything is choreographed with a story line, it's all very intricate. Everybody will have a real good time."
While featuring some of the world's top stuntmen performing any variety of
death-defying feats, Goodner said that one of the broader focus of the show is to teach children about safety and making the right choices.
Positive actions, staying in school and wearing proper safety equipment are among the topics presented at each show.
Goodner said the show has been in development since he began working with Xtreme Air 10 years ago.
"We've done different facets of the show all along, in theme parks and at half-time shows," he said. "But we just put it all together in the last couple of years.
"The storyline evolved for just over eight years. We've had hundreds of chances to see what works, what crowds like and what is going to make them laugh. Our storyline is tried and true."
Xtreme Air was based out of Southern California before moving to Carson Valley recently.
"We can run the show from anywhere," said Goodner, who has traveled across the globe with the show. "We love the mountains here, we love the family atmosphere. It's just a great place to be."
Goodner and several of the Xtreme Air performers practice out of his home in Gardnerville, but teams from all over the country are coming to the Sierra this weekend to perform.
"We're flying in mountain boarders from Colorado, a BMX team from back east and stuntmen from Los Angeles," he said. "Being in this industry for 10 years, you really get to know who the best out there is, and we basically just recruit them to add to our show."
Some local MotoX, or freestyle motocross athletes, will perform at the show this weekend as well.
In total, about eight athletes in the show are from the Gardnerville area.
Xtreme Air will perform seven shows at Fuji Park this weekend, with shows at 6 and 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday. Each show lasts two hours.
Tickets are available starting at $8 at www.tickets.com, at Raley's grocery store or at the gate this weekend.
