A new church is in the works for Carson City First Church of Christ, Scientist off Old Clear Creek Road.
The church is applying for a special-use permit for a 3,800 square-foot building that will house a reading room, Sunday school and meeting place for services.
"We're thrilled with our progress," said Charlene Webster, chairwoman of the church board. "We are definitely open to the public, and all are welcome to attend our services. That's basically why we moved."
The church recently sold the building it had occupied on Minnesota Street since 1941 to the Methodist Church. In the meantime, the reading room, services and Sunday school have been held at a temporary location at 1801 Highway 50 E. The new site will be at 110 Clear Creek Ave.
Although the Christian church doesn't believe in saying how many members it has, the church is growing, Webster said. Members believe in healing through prayer and hold readings on specific topics, like world peace and family life.
"We hope the hours and location will be more family friendly," Webster said. "We have many members and guests who live in the Gardnerville area, and we feel (the new location) will be helpful for them."
The new building will have a portico and windows looking out to the mountains, Webster said.
