The Carson City Sheriff's Office is offering alcohol compliance training aimed at hindering the sale of alcohol to minors.

"The potential for alcoholic beverage violation or alcohol-related liability is tremendous and failing to have comprehensive and ongoing training for both managers and employees increases the risk that a violation will occur," said Sheriff Kenny Furlong.

In June 2003, the Sheriff's Department began a series of alcohol compliance checks in which they visited random establishments to see if underage decoys would be served alcohol. The latest check two weeks ago resulted in 19 citations being issued Furlong said.

Sgt. Bob White said over the last 11 months 60 citations have been issued as a result of the operations.

"We're offering the training so the clerks are aware of selling alcohol to minors and they are aware that this community is not going to stand for that," he said. "This training is going to allow businesses to have the tools to do their job and be responsible."

The training, from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the Carson Nugget, will include a presentation by White and Capital Beverage to cover proper identification checking, responsible service of alcoholic beverages, local and state laws, a test for refusing sales and tips for managing, displaying and marketing liquor.

Businesses and employees who wish to attend the training should contact Mary Wolkomir at 887-2020 ext. 1907.
