It doesn't appear that anything has really changed for the Carson High boys golf team. It looks like the Senators will once again be in a tight battle for a berth to the NIAA 4A State Championships.
Carson's experienced team got off to an encouraging start when it took second on Tuesday at Washoe Golf Course in the first Northern 4A tournament of the season. The Senators' performance was encouraging because they finished just 11 strokes behind Galena, which has been the Northern 4A's top team for some time.
It was also encouraging considering that Carson coach Rod Butler believes his team didn't play all that well on Tuesday.
Galena won with a score of 397 while Carson finished with a 408. But right behind the Senators were Fallon (410) and Reno (411). Reed was fifth at 424.
Tim Hohl led the way for Carson, finishing fifth with a 78. "They're figuring that we're in the top three contenders," said Butler about his team.
Butler said Fallon's finish wasn't surprising since Carson faced the Greenwave in a scrimmage.
"They hung right with us in that one, too," Butler said. "It wasn't a big surprise that they were that close.
"We were happy with where we finished. I was happy that we were able to hang in there."
But Butler thought his team should have been able to score under 400. "I believe its higher than what it should be," said Butler about his team's score. "I will expect that next week we'll shoot lower than that. I was pleased with the way Tim played."
Also for Carson, Tyson Roser and Scott Jenkins tied for ninth with an 80, J.T. Cockerill shot an 84, Andrew Meyers fired an 86 and Bryan Upton had a 91.
"I think we're strong through about 10 players," said Butler about his team. The next even is tentatively set for this Tuesday at Thunder Canyon.
