Carson track takes third at Fallon

Senators run at Fallon Elks Invitational

Matt Moore won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and Tyler Smith took the long jump to help Carson High School's boys capture third-place as a team at the Fallon Elks Invitational track and field meet Saturday.

Moore shattered his personal record in the 300 intermediates with a time of 40.88 seconds, while Smith flew to a lifetime best 20-feet, 11-inches and Jeremy Gray went 20-1-1/2 to place fourth, supplying highlights for the Senators during a meet that attracted athletes from more than 30 schools to Fallon's Ed Arciniega Athletic Complex.

Moore also placed sixth in the 110 high hurdles in 16.24 and ran a leg on Carson's second-place 4x400 relay team. Seth Carter, Gray, Smith and Moore combined to run 3:36 in the relay. His win in the intermediates was impressive, according to coach Todd Ackerman.

"That was a good win," Ackerman said. "He ran a very nice race and ran extremely well the last three hurdles. He's still learning the proper technique, so I think he's only going to get stronger and get better."

Carson's boys also scored well in the throws, highlighted by Stephen Waicul's second-place effort of 145-11 in the discus and second-place in the shot put by Nick Rebholtz (46-1). Rob Ghiglieri also placed third (144-6) and Nick Rebholtz eighth (138-9) in the discus. Ghiglieri was fourth in the shot put (45-8) and Waicul ninth (43-7).

In the girls competition, Carson won the 4x200 relay as Amanda Benson, Sinead McSweeney, Lindsey Ford and Sondra McAlman ran 1:51.4. The same quartet also placed third in the 4x400 (4:16).

Janine Stone ran a personal record time of 12:59 to place fifth in 3,200. Mike Horrigan also placed fifth in the 200 with a time of 23.75.

Carson finished eighth in the girls team standings.
