The Carson City Ministerial Fellowship is celebrating the 53rd annual National Day of prayer with a community event at noon Thursday at the Capitol.
Several local pastors will offer prayer and words of encouragement for the city, state and nation. Mayor Ray Masayko has arranged for the Laxalt Building chimes to play "God Bless America" at noon; opening and closing music will be hosted by Calvary Chapel worship leader Gary Leist.
"My view, especially in light of the situation we find ourselves in in Iraq, it is more imperative now than ever before, we beseech our Lord on His direction - His terms of peace, on behalf of those we have elected into office. That they have a keen sense of His discernment and understanding of His word," said Pat Propster, president of the Carson City Ministerial Fellowship.
This year's theme is "Let Freedom Ring." It is accompanied by Bible verse Leviticus 25:10, "Proclaim liberty throughout this land and to all its inhabitants."
Propster said Sen. Mark Amodei, R-Carson City, will deliver a special greeting.
"We need to set a good example for our children and our youth at praying for our nation. It is how we stay involved in the political structure. We start with prayer, register to vote and act on our liberties," Propster said.
"If we don't, then we will be the people who squandered the blood that was shed for the liberties we find ourselves in the luxury of.
"I'm a firm believer we have not because we ask not. We need to ask Him for intervention in our lives and His country."
