Information on sex offenders online

Information about sex offenders living in Nevada, including 37 in the Carson City area, is now available to the public on the Department of Public Safety's sex offender Web site.

The Criminal History Repository is required by law to maintain the Web site containing information on sex offenders including names and aliases along with the ZIP code identifying the area of the state they live in. The site contains information about those offenders who are believed to be high risk to re-offend and those who are a moderate risk.

Those offenders who are not considered likely to re-offend are not on the Web site.

There are 46 Tier-3 offenders currently living in Nevada. Those are regarded as the most likely to commit another offense. There are 1,386 of the less dangerous types listed on the site.

Those interested in searching for offenders can do so by name, Social Security number or license plate number. People can also search the offenders believed to be in their specific area of the state by entering the ZIP code.

But Public Safety officials point out the Web site shows only those who have complied with the law requiring them to register with local law enforcement within two days after being released.

A search of the ZIP codes for the Carson City area showed a total of 37 offenders ranging from individuals who were convicted of statutory sexual seduction to those with multiple convictions on charges of sexually assaulting children. Several appear listed in two different zip codes - one for where they live and the second for where they work.

But only four of 37 in Carson City and one of 11 offenders listed in Douglas were pictured on the Web site, making it difficult - especially with some of the more common names - to confirm the identity of offenders.

Kim Evans of Public Safety said the repository has access to photos of every person listed and will load them onto the site where they can be viewed. She said one employee has been dedicated to the task.

Funding for the Web site was provide by a gift from the Children's Advocacy Alliance in Henderson along with federal Byrne grant money. No state funds were used.
