The Galena High golf team stood in third after the first day of the NIAA 4A State Championships at Aliante Golf Club in North Las Vegas.
Galena finished with a score of 398, one stroke ahead of Coronado, which stood at 399. Bonanza was in first with a 384 and was followed by Palo Verde with a 386. Green Valley was in fifth with a 406, one stroke ahead of Fallon with a 407.
In the individual standings, Galena's Steve Kafchinski was tied for third after firing a 2-over-par 74 on the par-72, 7,022-yard course. Spanish Springs' Dennis Carr fired a 71 for the first round lead and Bonanza's Joseph Wieser was in second with a 73.
Bishop Gorman's Johnny Pinjuv and Fallons' Scott Smith was tied with Kafchinski at 74. Right behind Kafchinski in a group of players tied for sixth was Galena's Dan Wittlinger, who shot a 75.
Carson High's Tim Hohl was in the middle of the pack after firing an 80. Douglas High Trent Hennessy-York fired an 84.
Other result for Galena were Kyle Erickson with a 79, Morgan Goff shot an 82 and Ryan Hill and Wade McElroy each had an 88. The second and final round of the tournament will be held today.
