Convenience store robber gets prison

A Carson City man was sentenced Tuesday to up to 10 years in prison for the February robbery of a North Carson convenience store.

Jorge Perez, 28, apologized through an interpreter for his actions prior to District Judge Bill Maddox handing down the sentence of 33 to 120 months in prison.

According to police reports, Perez robbed the 7-Eleven at 3701 N. Carson St., about 9:30 p.m. Feb. 26.

Store video surveillance shows Perez playing a slot machine for a short time before two other customers left the store.

When Perez is next seen on camera, he has the clerk's hand twisted behind her back and appears to be pressing a knife against her, said Deputy District Attorney Chris Hicks.

After grabbing $196 from the cash register, Perez hopped over the counter and ran from the store, the tape shows .

A flyer with a photograph from the video was sent to area law-enforcement agencies, where a parole officer recognized Perez as the man he monitored on a federal weapons charge.

Hicks said Perez had served 33 months in federal prison in Victorville, Calif. He was released 13 days before the robbery.

He was serving federal time for being arrested in Carson City in possession of a firearm after being convicted in 1998 in Washoe County for burglary.

Perez also faces up to three years in prison for the parole violation. That sentence will be served after the completion of the burglary sentence, Hicks said.
