Galena's Wittlinger second in state golf

Galena High's Dan Wittlinger came within one stroke of winning the NIAA 4A State Golf Championship on Tuesday.

Wittlinger finished with a 151 after firing a 76 on Tuesday at the 7,022-yard, par-72 Aliante Golf Club in North Las Vegas. Wittlinger tied for second with Sparks Greg Wenzel and Bonanza's Joseph Wieser.

They finished one stroke behind state champion Aaron Slonim, who finished with a 150 (76-74). Spanish Springs' Dennis Carr, the first round leader with a one-under-par 71, struggled to an 81 on Tuesday and finished fifth.

As a team, Galena settled for fourth with an 812 (398-414) behind Coronado (797-399-398), Palo Verde (787-386-401) and state champion Bonanza (780-384-396).

Carson High's Tim Hohl finished tied for 22nd with a 161 (80-81). Douglas High's Trent Hennesy-York finished with a 169 (84-85).

Other results for Galena were: Steve Kafchinski (161-74-87), Morgan Goff (162-82-80), Wade McElroy (169-88-81), Kyle Erickson (169-79-80) and Ryan Hill (182-88-94).

3A GOLF

Dayton High's Kevin Goles, Fernley's Matt Leestma and Yerington's Ryan Rife are all in contention for the NIAA 3A State Golf championships going into today's final round.

Goles is tied for the lead while Leestma is two strokes back. Goles is tied with a Virgin Valley golfer as both shot 79 on Tuesday at Mesquite's Palms Golf Club. Leestma was in third with an 81 and Rife was tied for fourth with a Boulder City golfer at 82.

In the team standings, Dayton is in fifth with a 469, trailing Lowry (449), Boulder City (440), Truckee (438) and Virgin Valley (435). Also for Dayton, Trent Wood fired a 93, Shane Castro had a 98, Andy Palmer shot a 97 and Patrick Lassak had a 101. In addition, Yerington's Kevin O'Keefe shot an 88.
